JAKARTA'S ICONS

MONAS

Monumen Nasional or National Monument, which is located in the center of Jakarta, was built in the 1960s. The architects of this monument were Soedarsono and Frederich Silaban, with Ir. Rooseno as consultant.




On top of this monument is a flame of fire made of 14,5 tons of bronze plated with 35 kg of gold, which symbolizes the struggle of the Indonesia people to achieve independence.

KERAK TELOR

This is one of yummy dekicacy from Jakarta. The main ingredients are sticky rice, an egg (usually duck), ground dried shrimp, fried shallots, and dried shredded coconut. You can buy this snack in various places in Jakarta, especially in the month of June, around the time of Jakarta's anniversary.



ONDEL-ONDEL

Ondel-ondel is a pair of huge dolls that's featured at almost every celebration in Jakarta. The height of the dolls is about 2.5-3 meters with a body diameter of about 80 cm. Besides attire and hairstyle, what differentiate the gender is the color of the face: red for male and white for female.


BUSWAY


Started on January 15, 2004, the Transjakarta Bus or usually called "Busway" was inspired by Transmilenio, a successful bus system in Bogota, Colombia. The Busway was made to provide Jakartas with a more comfortable and reliable means of transportation.
